One factor that may determine how well you do on your next fishing trip is whether you consider the kind of fishing you plan on. The sort of fishing equipment you select will be mostly based on your location, the type of fish found there, and also what level of fisherman you are.

Before you visit fly fishing tackle shops, you may want brush up on the “language” of tackle. Here are a few important terms:

At the bottom end of the rod is a butt cap made of rubber or sometimes cork. Generally, you’ll find butt caps on rods that use line weights of 1 to 6 pounds. The butt cap is constructed so that it can be pressed into the body when fighting to land a fish.

The reel seat is the attachment point for the reel. There are several methods of attachment, but most rods have a threaded hood that screws down onto a foot that extends from the reel. Types of reel seats include up-locking, down-locking and sliding band.

Should you choose to fish on the shore in a small pond or lagoon, you should do well with a lightweight fishing pole. Your best bet would be a spin casting reel, as it allows for maximum reach without the backlash. A 6 ft or 7 ft rod will suffice for smaller fish. The heavier fish you may snag in this setting may call for a light mono filament fishing line. The best lure to use would be earthworms in this case. When you are drifting or anchored on a bigger-sized lake, you should opt for a 7-foot, size 30 fishing rod. But those who decide to go trolling will probably need along with the lure a rod counting reel to achieve the necessary depth. You might think about using a 16-20 lb. mono with a 6 in leader of 20 lb. fluorocarbon.

So what equipment do you need for large mouth bass that swim in freshwater? Your best option is to choose a lighter spinning rod and reed—a bulky one will wear you out faster. A 6 lb. mono with a 10 lb. fluorocarbon 4 ft. leader would be recommended. Lures, minnows, and worms all make good bait. For saltwater fishing a popular method is surf fishing; with this kind of fishing it is essential to keep your bait in the trenches in order to catch the game fish. You’ll need heavier gear for this kind of fishing. 10-12 foot rod and a 30 size spinning reel. Add to this a 30 lb. fluorocarbon leader of roughly 6 ft.
Usually, the more expensive rods are designed for the most experienced fishermen. These rods use advanced parts and enhancements. For occasional or amateur fisherman, you can get away with using a cheaper rod. If, however, you eventually intend to fish more often in the UK or turn pro, down the road you’ll require fishing equipment with state of the art enhancements.
